2010 Zipp 808 tubular carbon wheelset 700c 16/20 spoke Zipp 88/188 hub Ti skewer
Frame and Wheel is auctioning a Zipp 808 wheel set on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store. The wheels were purchased new in 2011. They have had only one owner. They were used only for triathlon. They were never crashed. They have been in storage. The owner is selling them because they are no longer needed. The wheels feature Zipp 88  front hub and Zipp 188 rear hub, 81 mm rim depth, 24 mm rim width, adjustable hubs, Zipp titanium skewers and white on silver banner Zipp lettering. The wheels as shown weigh 3 pounds 8 ounces (1.58 kg). There are 45 images of the wheel set at Frame and Wheel’s Flickr page. Please take a look. Please see the Frame and Wheel website for more information about the company and the service.

Review of condition
The wheels are in very good condition. They are clean and they are ready to ride. The hubs spin smoothly and freely. The spokes are tight and straight. The rims are round and the wheels are true. There is no lateral or vertical variation in the rims when placed in a truing stand. There are no cracks, flexing, flaking or discoloration in the carbon rim or the carbon shell. There are no notches in the free hub body splines from a cassette. There are no cracks in the hub bodies. There is no play in the hubs. There are no cracks in the flanges of the hubs. There is no corrosion on the spokes, the nipples or on the skewers. The stickers are not peeling off. The skewers are straight and complete. Frame and Wheel notes the following. There is a 5 mm x 20 mm rip in one of the Zipp stickers on the drive side of the rear wheel. There is a 3 mm x 5 mm rip in the 808 sticker on the drive side rear wheel. There is a blemish on the front hub “Z” logo. There is a light layer of glue on the rims. The braking surface of the rims show light wear. Some of the Zipp stickers have lost their whiteness.

Frame and Wheel conclusion
Frame and Wheel’s view is that these Zipp 808 wheels will make an excellent choice for the triathlete who seeks a set of light and aero wheels for Ironman or Olympic length bike distances. They will also suit the road cyclist who seeks a set of aero rims for flat or rolling terrain and wants to chagne the voice of his or her bike. The wheels are in very good condition and show immaterial signs of wear. They are effectively new. These wheels will immediately transform the look, feel and performance of any time trial or road bicycle and can be made to go as fast as their wider and more glamourous Zipp Firecrest cousins. The new owner will relish the sound of these wheels as they move neatly through the wind and as result, may never bother to switch them out. An excellent opportunity to obtain a great pair of deep dish carbon tubular wheels.

  1. A very interesting read on carbon wheelset. Any chance of doing something similar on the recent proliferation of carbon/alloy wheels. Seems they're kind of a half-way between the durability/weight penalty of alloy and the aero/weight benefits of carbon.
