A lovely exchange

I get a lot of requests when running auctions. This has to be one of the more amusing ones from a potential customer in the UK.

Good day,
Not being very familiar with your particular vernacular of the English language, would you please be so kind as to explain the meaning of the phrase "parted out". I have made an assumption based on my unfortunate subliminal ingestion of the copious amounts of "americanisms" that I've had to endure from several television programs favoured by my children,  however I feel it would perhaps be for the best if I could have a correct definition to consider before I contemplate entering into an international transaction. Thank you ever so much,  in anticipation.

J.

p.s. Maths, and not math is surely the colloquial form of mathematics.   ;-)

Dear Sir,
I am in receipt of your electronic communication, and very pleased to have received it from a Man of Letters such as yourself. It is a highly relevant query. Please accept my sincerest apologies for diluting the English language in this manner. I suffer less from the influence of American television than I do from the dialect of the American road cyclist. "Parted out" refers to the practice of disassembling a bicycle completely, or removing one part and replacing it with another. For example, many road cyclists will remove an existing crank set and replace it with a power meter such as an SRM or Quarq. An American cyclist might say: "I parted out that Campy crank set for an SRM." I hope this explanation clarifies the meaning of the term for you and gives you the confidence to bid strongly for this crank set. If you win, and are still not satisfied you will be able to return the item under the Frame and Wheel Return policy. Thank you very much for your correspondence and good luck with the bidding.

Yours sincerely,

Fred Thomas

Sir,

To "you"
Many, many thanks for your most considered reply.  There is absolutely no need to apologies for the propensity of your male bretheron to occasionally bastardise the mother tongue. You're most welcome to incorporate your favoured variations whenever you see fit as they serve to clearly distinguish between the "you" and the "us". Which helps 4 sure.

Yours sincerely
US aka J

Zipp 900 Tubular disc wheel carbon Zipp 182 hub 202P free hub Shimano 10-speed TT 700c

Sold: $578  Buyer: USA
Zipp 900 Tubular disc wheel carbon Zipp 182 hub 202P free hub Shimano 10-speed TT 700c
Frame and Wheel is offering a Zipp 900 Tubular disc wheel on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store. The wheel was used for racing only. It was used in about 15 time trials. It has an estimated 200 miles of use. It has never been crashed. The owner is selling it because it is no longer needed. The wheel features tubular rim, ABLC (Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control) dimpled surface, 20 mm rim width, Zipp 182 disc hub with 202P free hub body (Shimano 10 speed), OEM skewer, track wheel adaptability, dual side valve opening and early Zipp disc cool. The wheel as shown weighs 2 pounds and 7 ounces (1.1 kg). The serial number on the rim reads 071206. There are 40 images of the wheel set at Frame and Wheel’s Flickr page. Please take a look. Includes wheel bag. Ships in custom wheel box. Cannot be converted to 11-speed. Please note that the owner purchased the wheel in 2007 from a shop that surreptitiously placed 2008 silver banner Zipp wheel stickers over the older red and white Zipp wheel stickers. This wheel is a 2004 model at the latest.

Review of condition
The wheel is in good condition. It is clean and ready to ride. There is no cracking, flexing, discoloration or flaking in the rim. The hub spins freely and smoothly. There is no play in the hub. The skewer is straight and undamaged. The valve opening is undamaged. The stickers are on securely. Frame and Wheel notes the following. The wheel shows lateral variation when placed in the truing stand of less than 1.5 mm (the width of a penny). There are five 0.5 mm x 1.0 mm scratches on the drive side surface of the wheel. There is light surface corrosion on the non drive side hub. There are scratches on the free hub body from a cassette. There is a light layer of glue on the rim. The braking surfaces of the rim show light wear. The 2008 silver banner Zipp stickers are not the original stickers and have been placed over older red and white banner stickers.

Frame and Wheel conclusion
Frame and Wheel’s view is that this Zipp 900 Tubular will make and excellent choice for the road cyclist or triathlete who seeks a functional and practical disc wheel for racing or for training. Despite its older heritage and its clumsy cosmetic upgrade the wheel is lightly used and in good condition. The new owner will notice the benefits of a disc wheel and may find that the wheel and the time trial bike that it is on gets more use as a result. An excellent opportunity to change the voice of a time trial bike and improve performance in the race against the clock.
