Bontrager Race X Lite CycleOps Power Tap Pro Rear Wheel 700c wired power meter

Sold: $310 Buyer: United Kingdom
Bontrager Race X Lite CycleOps Power Tap Pro Rear Wheel 700c wired power meter
Frame and Wheel is auctioning a Bontrager Race X Lite Wired CycleOps Power Tap Pro rear wheel on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store. The owner purchased the wheel second hand in 2005 from a bike club friend. The wheel was used primarily on a trainer and on training rides. It has been in storage for about one year. The owner is selling the wheel because he no longer uses it and he is clearing out his basement of cycling equipment. The wheel features Bontrager high flange hubs, one-cross lacing, sixteen bladed spokes, 30 mm deep Bontrager Race X Lite aero rims and a Continental Ultra Sport tire. The power meter features Coded 2.4 PowerTap Pro CPU (version 4.07), a wired crank-arm mounted cadence sensor and magnet and wired shark-fin hub sensor and handlebar mount. Additional accessories include computer docking system with USB adapter, CycleOps training software, coded heart rate monitor strap and extra hub cover. The wheel as shown weighs 3 pounds 12 ounces (1.06 kg). The FCC ID number on the CPU reads T8P-SL2P401. New cartridge bearing on drive side installed. Extra drive side cartridge bearing and non-drive-side bearings included. New batteries are installed in hub, CPU and heart rate monitor. Original instructions are included. Guidance on how to “learn:” the heart rate monitor included. There are 50 images of the wheel at Frame and Wheel Auction Services Please take a look.
Please note the following
Frame and Wheel successfully auctioned this item about a month ago. The buyer correctly identified that the cartridge bearings were rough. Frame and Wheel sent to him new cartridge bearings, which the buyer successfully installed on the non-drive side. However, the buyer was unable to get the power readings to work properly and returned the wheel to Frame and Wheel. Frame and Wheel replaced the batteries in the CPU, the hub and the heart rate monitor and set up the system on a bike and determined that weak batteries was the problem. Frame and Wheel tried out the system on a trainer and a number of times and can tell that the readings make sense. Frame and Wheel also ran the diagnostic test on the CPU and found that all the tests were completed successfully except for the loop test. Frame and Wheel is not sure what this test is for but it does not seem to affect the power, heart rate, distance and cadence readings. Frame and Wheel contacted Saris Cycling group and obtained instructions on how to get the CPU to learn the frequency of the heart rate strap. Frame and Wheel knows more about the system now and believes that it is in better condition than it was during the original sale.
Review of condition
The wheel is in good condition. It is clean and there are no dents or cracks in the rim. The stickers are clean and adhere properly to the rim. The splines on the free hub body are not notched. There is no corrosion anywhere on the rim, spokes or hub. The spokes are tight and straight and the rim is round and true. The pawls are quiet and the wheel spins freely and smoothly. Frame and Wheel notes the following. There is some play in the rear hub. The braking surface of the rim shows wear. The skewer springs are missing. The tire shows some wear. The CPU is in good condition. It is clean and it fits onto the handlebar and computer mount properly. The CPU is not scratched or cracked and it toggles through its various settings. The heart rate monitor strap is clean and it works properly. Frame and Wheel carefully and in good faith inspected this wheel, but cannot guarantee that every imperfection has been spotted.
Frame and Wheel conclusion
Frame and Wheel has spent some time learning about the system and believes that it is in better condition than it was during the first sale. Frame and Wheel’s view is that this power meter package will suit the cyclist who wants to train with power on an indoor trainer and on the road using the same bicycle. It is in good condition and it has many hours of use remaining. Frame and Wheel notes that this version of the PowerTap is known to have problems if the hub gets soaking wet. Nevertheless, the hub should be fine if the new owner avoids heavy wet weather or dries out the hub afterwards. This is an excellent opportunity to obtain quality power meter functionality at a steep discount to the retail price.

Review of condition
The wheels are in good condition. They show signs of wear, but they are clean and they are ready to ride. The wheels are round and true. The spokes are tight. The bearings are smooth and the hubs are spinning freely and quietly. The free hub body is not notched and the pawls are quiet. The skewers are straight and complete. The tubulars are new, freshly glued and holding pressure. There is no corrosion in the hubs or on the skewers. Frame and Wheel notes the following. There is a 2 x 2 mm chip in the Duraflon on a non drive-side spoke on the rear wheel. This spoke and the one it crosses are not straight. The carbon weave is beginning to show through the Lightweight lettering. There is wear on the rims in the following places:

Frame and Wheel carefully and in good faith inspected this item but cannot guarantee that every imperfection has been spotted and mentioned.
Frame and Wheel conclusion
Frame and Wheel’s view is that these are remarkably light and clearly very stiff aerodynamic wheels. They will suit the rider who lives for the sprint. Although the wheels show wear, they wheels are in good condition and still rideable. A logical course of action is for the new owner to have them repaired by the Carbonsports factory in Germany. This process is easy to arrange and is executed through the Carbonsports representative in the new owner’s region. With some patience and some extra investment, the new owner will end up with an effectively new pair of very light and very stiff wheels. It will be worth it as wheels like these are rarely offered in a no-reserve auction. This is an excellent opportunity to obtain a unique wheel set at an attractive valuation.

There are four chips of about 1 mm x 3 mm in size along the bottom edge of the head tube. There is a 5 x 5 mm chip in finish of the non-drive side blade of the front fork. There are two 3 x 3 mm chips near it. The damage was incurred by the handlebars rubbing against the fork blades when the bike was being transported in a travel case. There is flaking in the finish around the first cable stop in the top tube where a corroded ferrule was drilled out. The resulting flaking in the finish was painted over. Frame and Wheel conclusion
Frame and Wheel’s view is that the S2 is best frame set Cervelo has to offer. It is comfortable and sturdy, light and fast, reasonably priced and it has a beautiful voice that inspires new levels of dedication and performance. The 2009 model year graphics are also nice. Frame and Wheel had this frame set built up with Shimano Dura-Ace 7900, 3T bars and stem and Zipp 303 / 202 tubular wheels. It was the finest and most satisfying road bike ever for Frame and Wheel, and the new owner is likely to be  satisfied too. Frame and Wheel now rides an Austro-Daimler Superleicht Carbon Di2, which is a modern day version of the bicycle Frame and Wheel raced in the 1980s and 1990s. For Frame and Wheel, this is the only marque that has a stronger and more seductive voice than the Cervelo S2; so much more, that Frame and Wheel has obtained the rights to the logo and will soon make the frame set available on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store (Please sign up for the newsletter to be informed of timing). Regardless, this Cervelo S2 is a fine frame set too and it has many more hours of racing and training remaining in its carbon fiber. The new owner will no doubt be inspired by its performance, its look, its voice and most certainly the price at which it was obtained.
