Sold: $1,025 Buyer: USA
1998 Eddy Merckx EX Pro Titanium 53cm frame Reynolds Ouzo Pro carbon fork road Litespeed
Frame and Wheel is auctioning a 1998 Eddy Merckx EX Pro Titanium frame and Reynolds Ouzo Pro carbon fork on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store. The owner purchased the frame third hand from Exeter Cycles staff in 2009. The frame was built up with a new Reynolds Ouzo Pro carbon fork and Crane Creek S2 head set in that year and used as a single speed bike for training. The current owner never crashed the frame. The frame has been in storage and the owner is selling it because he no longer needs a single speed bicycle. The frame features 3 / 2.5 titanium tubing, ovalized top tube, down tube and seat tube, oversized chain stays, 6/4 titanium rear semi-horizontal drop outs, seat post binder and Campagnolo bolt, double water bottle cage mounts, Italian thread bottom bracket, Litespeed craftsmanship and Eddy Merckx design. The frame weighs 4 pounds 7 ounces (2.02 kg) as shown. The serial number on the bottom of the bottom bracket shell reads 687303. The serial number on the fork reads 870317. No seat post included. 1 1/8 inch steer tube shim included. Please see 80 additional images of the frame at Frame and Wheel’s Flickr page. Please see the Frame and Wheel website for more information about the service.
Review of condition
The frame set is in very good condition. It is clean and ready for build. There are no dents, bends or bulges that raise concerns about the structural integrity of the frame. There are no cracks, flaking or flexing that raise concerns about the structural integrity of the fork. The rear drop outs are in alignment with the centerline of the frame. There is no wear on the bottom of the down tube or on the back of the seat tube from road grit. The cable stops are secured firmly and clear of obstructions and corrosion. The down tube bosses are not damaged and not missing screws. The head set races are not corroded and the external cups are not damaged. The bottom bracket threads are not stripped or corroded. The stickers are not scratched or peeling. The steer tube is not cracked or showing any bulges. The front drop outs are in alignment with each other. The crown race is mounted securely on the front fork. The cartridge bearings move smoothly and the headset is not missing any parts. There is no corrosion in the rear drop outs. The cable guides on the bottom of the bottom bracket shell is not missing.
Frame and Wheel notes the following. There are four 5 x 10 mm blemishes on the top of the seat stays. There is a 5 x 15 mm abrasion on the inside of the non drive-side chain stay from a tire. There is a 20 x 40 mm area of abrasion on the outside of the drive-side chain stay. There is a 5 x 5 mm abrasion on the bottom of the top tube near the front cable stop. There is a 5 x 5 mm abrasion on the bottom of the top tube near the rear cable stop. The adjustment pins for the rear drop outs are missing. There is wear on the  rear and front drop outs. There is wear under the crown of the front fork. There is wear around the bolt hole for the rear brake. There is corrosion around the water bolt holes.
Frame and Wheel conclusion
Frame and Wheel’s view is that this Eddy Merckx EX Pro Titanium will appeal to the cyclist who seeks a light and strong frame set that will endure season after season of training and racing. The frames distinctive oval tubes and oversized chain stays reflect Mr. Merckx’s profound knowledge of all things bicycle and the titanium material alludes to the man’s legendary strength. The frame set has led a sheltered life and has yet to tap into its cannibal spirit. The new owner will have great fun building this frame set up into a beautiful bicycle that has a powerful and classic voice. This is a rare and excellent opportunity to obtain a very nice and very unique frame set at an excellent valuation.

Letter from Fred Thomas, President of Frame and Wheel about revised PAAS for buyers

Dear Frame and Wheel customers,
I read that Edvard Munch’s famous painting, The Scream, will be auctioned in New York in May. The auction is being conducted by Sotheby’s in New York and the estimated selling price is $80m. This news highlights an important point about auctions that has been gnawing at me for some time, and that is relevant to Frame and Wheel. When something gets auctioned at Sotheby’s or Christie’s, it is the buyer who pays the commission rather than the seller. Frame and Wheel is an auction service and in this spirit has always charged the buyer a Product Analysis and Service (PAAS) charge, primarily to defray costs of packaging and to compensate for the time and effort of originating and executing a smooth auction. However, this sum has been a fixed charge rather than a percentage of the hammer price, and has been arbitrarily set at a level that does not reflect accurately the amount of work that goes into originating numerous and relevant images, providing accurate and comprehensive descriptions, responding promptly to email questions and shipping worldwide. The low PAAS charge effectively puts the bulk of the commission burden on the seller. Consequently, Frame and Wheel is introducing the new PAAS structure that will level the commission burden between buyer and seller, and allow Frame and Wheel to continue to provide excellent auctions. The changes are effective 27 February 2012. Thank you for your patience and understanding and I look forward to working with you in 2012.
Sincerely,
Fred Thomas
President

Vintage 1991 Trek 2300 Pro 54cm Shimano 600 Ultegra 7spd Scott USA Drop-in bars Wolber/Matrix tubular wheelset

Sold: $350  Buyer: USA
Vintage 1991 Trek 2300 Pro 54cm Shimano 600 Ultegra 7spd Scott USA Drop-in bars Wolber/Matrix tubular wheelset
Frame and Wheel is auctioning a 1991 Trek 2300 Pro road bike on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store. The frame was purchased new in 1990 at Clifton Park Schwinn in New York. The frame was built up with new derailleurs, cranks, shifters, stem, handle bar and seat post. The brakes levers and the brakes were transferred from a previous bicycle. The wheels were built up separately in 1990. The bicycle was used for all weather racing and training from 1990 to 1992 and recreationally to 1996. It was in storage from 1996 to 2002 and then used for club riding and recreation through to 2008. It has been in storage again since then. The bicycle has never been crashed, it has had only one owner and it has always been stored inside. The owner built and serviced the bicycle. The cables and housing were replaced in 2005. The seat was replaced in 2008. The bicycle features Scott USA Drop-In handle bars, a Cinelli stem, Shimano Ultegra 600 drive train, Shimano 105 caliper brakes and brake levers, Wolber / Matrix tubular wheel set with Shimano Dura-Ace hubs, Bontrager Race Lux seat, carbon fiber top tube, down tube and seat tube and classic nineties “Day-Glo” yellow “black-splash” finish on the alloy chain stays, seat stays, head tube and fork. The serial number on the bottom bracket shell reads 687303. The serial number on the front fork reads 45295. The bicycle as shown weighs 19 pounds 8 ounces (8.8 kg). No pedals included. There are 120 detailed images of the bicycle at Frame and Wheel’s Flickr page. Please visit the Frame and Wheel website for more information about the service and the company.

Review of condition
The bicycle is in very good condition. It is clean and ready to ride. The shifting is precise and complete in all fourteen gears. The brakes activate easily and grip well and there is about 3 mm of pad remaining on the brake pad wear indicator. The cable housing is not cracked. The wheels are true and round and they spin freely and smoothly. There is no lateral play in the hubs. The spokes are straight and tight. The side walls of the tires are not cracked. The tires hold pressure.

There are no cracks, bulges flexing or flaking raise concerns about the structural integrity of the carbon fiber tubes of the frame. There are no bends or dents that raise concerns about the structural integrity of the fork. There is no road wear on the bottom of the down tube, on the the back of the seat tube or on the inside surfaces of the chain stays. The front and rear forks are in alignment with the centerline of the frame and the rear derailleur hanger is straight and undamaged. The front derailleur hanger is securely clamped to seat tube and undamaged. There is no wear under the front fork crown. The steer tube does not show any cracks or bulges. The crown race is secured firmly. There is no play in the bottom bracket. There is no corrosion in the head set races, the steer tube, the seat post or in the water bottle cage bolt holes. The chain does not read 0.75 or 1.0 on the chain wear tool. The decals are not peeling. The head badge is mounted securely and properly.

Frame and Wheel notes the following: There is a 5 x 10 mm scratch in the finish on the outside of the drive-side chain stay from a dropped chain. There is 3 x 5 mm scratch on the top of the drive side chain stay from a dropped chain. There is a 2 x 2 mm abrasion on the inside of the drive side chain stay. There is a 15 x 35 mm adhesive blemish on the bottom end of the drive-side chain stay that is difficult to remove. There is a 5 x 30 mm scratch on the bottom of the right side lower drop of the handle bar. There is a 5 x 30 mm area of scratches on the bottom of the left side lower drop of the handle bar. The “c” and the “e” in the word Composite on the non-drive side have scratches of 2 mm in size. The braking surfaces of the rims show wear. There is wear around the front and rear drop outs. There is wear on the outside surfaces of the crank arms. There is wear on the inside of the small and large chainrings. There are scratches on the right brake lever. There is wear around the center of the handle bar. There is wear on the seat post from a seat bag. the lettering on the brakes and the brake levers is worn off in places. The cables should be replaced soon.

Frame and Wheel conclusion
Frame and Wheel’s view is that this Trek 2300 Pro is a modern day classic that will appeal strongly to the classic Trek aficionado or anyone who seeks to experience the mystique of an early 1990s road bike. Its hybrid carbon fiber and alloy construction symbolizes the bicycle industry’s transition to carbon fiber construction and thus this bicycle will make a fine addition to a classic bike collection. Meanwhile, the Scott USA Drop-In handlebars are a curiosity that channel the spirit of Greg Lemond and the Day-Glo yellow finish (with black splash accent) conjures fond and perhaps embarrassing memories of 1990s popular culture and tastes. Nevertheless, the bicycle has a an original performance cycling voice that is reinforced by an Ultegra 600 drive train, down tube index shifting and a tubular wheel set. The unique mixture of emerging performance technologies and nineteen nineties fashion makes this bicycle different in a preferred way and a source of certain satisfaction and inspiration for its new owner.

Sold: $1,225 Buyer: Japan
2006 Trek Equinox 11 Size M Project One Shimano Dura-Ace 7800 10spd Bontrager wheels time trial
Frame and Wheel is auctioning a 2006 Trek Equinox 11 Project One carbon fiber time trial bicycle on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store. The bicycle was purchased new from Kennebunkport Bicycle Company in 2005. The owner rode the bicycle for less than 500 miles before placing it in storage. In late 2011, the owner returned to Kennebunkport Bicycle Company and traded the bicycle in towards a mountain bike. The bicycle has been in storage since then. The bicycle has never been crashed and it has had only one owner. The bicycle features full Dura-Ace 7800 group set, Bontrager clincher wheels, Mavic Win Tech wireless road computer, Selle San Marco Aspide Triathlon seat, Profile Design Carbon Stryke Ironman aero extension bars and distinctive translucent burgundy red Project One finish. The bicycle as shown weighs 19 pounds 10 ounces (8.9 kg). The serial number reads WL3261617. There are 120 detailed images of the bicycle at Frame and Wheel’s Flickr page. Please visit the Frame and Wheel website for more information about the service and the company.
Review of condition
The bicycle is in very good condition and shows only light signs of wear. It is clean and ready to ride. The shifting is precise and complete in all twenty gears. The brakes activate easily and grip well and there is about 3 mm of pad remaining on the brake pad wear indicator. The wheels are true and round and they spin freely and smoothly. There is no lateral play in the hubs. The spokes are straight and tight. The braking surfaces of the rims show light wear. The tire treads are not worn and the side walls are not cracked. The tires hold pressure.
There are no cracks, bulges flexing or flaking raise concerns about the structural integrity of the frame or the fork. There is no wear on the bottom of the down tube, the back of the seat tube or on the inside surfaces of the chain stays. The front and rear forks are in alignment with the centerline of the frame and the rear derailleur hanger is straight and undamaged. The front derailleur hanger is securely attached to seat tube and undamaged. there is no wear under the front fork crown. The steer tube does not show any cracks or bulges. The crown race is secured firmly. There is no play in the bottom bracket. There is no corrosion in the bolts on the stem, the steer tube, the seat post or in the water bottle cage bolt holes. The chain does not read 0.75 or 1.0 on the chain wear tool.
Frame and Wheel notes the following. There is a 1 x 80 mm scratch in the finish on the drive side chain stay near the drop out. There is a 1 x 10 mm scratch on the drive side top tube near the intersection with the seat tube. There is a 5 x 10 mm area of abrasion on the seat tube over the HC OVLC Carbon lettering. The seat post shows wear from adjustments. There is wear around the front and rear drop outs. There is wear on the right edge of the saddle. The batteries in the Win Tech road computer are operational and the device keeps time properly. However, Frame and Wheel was unable to convince the Win Tech road computer to track speed and distance. The front wheel is a Bontrager Race Lite. The rear wheel is a Bontrager Race X Lite. There is no bar tape on the aero extensions.
Frame and Wheel conclusion
Frame and Wheel’s view is that this Trek Equinox 11 will make an excellent choice for the entry level triathlete who seeks an aerodynamic but practical time trial bicycle. It is ready to ride and it has many hours of racing against the clock remaining in its aero tubes. Frame and Wheel believes that with some proper fitting, a set of aerodynamic carbon wheels and an aero helmet, the new owner will be able to make this bicycle go as fast as its descendants. The translucent burgundy finish and the flames that lurk just beneath it will intimidate the competition and inspire the new owner to reach new levels of performance in the race against the clock. David Cote will be pleased to know that the bicycle is back on the road.
