Frame and Wheel is auctioning a vintage 1984 Univega Sportour steel road bike on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store. The bicycle was purchased new at Northeast Bikes and Skies in Saugus, Massachusetts in the mid 1980s. It was used recreationally by its original owner until it was placed in storage in a dry basement, where it has been for more than fifteen years. The owner is selling the bicycle because he no longer rides it and would like to use the proceeds to upgrade his existing bicycle. The bicycle has never been crashed. It is has always been stored indoors in a dry location. The bicycle features chromoly double butted frame tubes, painted lettering, original rainbow sticker, crafted lugs, adjustable rear drop-outs, front and rear pannier eyelets, chain-hanger on the drive-side seat stay, two water bottle cage mounts, down-tube shifting, external cabling, Cat-Eye reflectors, 1983 Suntour ARX front and rear derailleurs, 1982 Sugino GT crank set, 1983 Dia-Compe 400 brake set, 1982 Sunshine Gyromaster hubs, Araya rims, original Benotto handle bar tape and Japanese provenance (the frame set was made in Japan by third party contract manufacturer and bike brand, Miyata). The bicycle as shown weighs 24 pounds (10.9 kg). The serial number on the bottom of the bottom bracket shell reads L285210. The serial number on the front fork reads TM 1258. Pedals are included. Review of condition

The bicycle is in good condition and it is ready to ride. It is clean and shows only light signs of wear. There are no dents, bends or cracks in the frame or fork. There are no bulges or bubbling in the finish anywhere on the frame set. There is no wear on the bottom of the down tube on the back of the seat tube or on the inside faces of the chain stays. The rear drop outs are in alignment with the center line of the frame. The rear derailleur hanger is straight and undamaged. The front fork is not bent and the drop out faces are parallel to each other. The handle bars are not bent. There is no corrosion in the head set and the races and bearings are clean and running smoothly. There is no play in the bottom bracket. There are no cracks in the cables and the shifting is smooth and complete. The brakes work properly and there is 10 mm of brake pad. The wheels are round and spinning properly. The spokes are tight and straight. The tires hold pressure.  

Frame and Wheel notes the following. There is a 5 x 20 mm scratch on the non-drive side down tube on the “E” in Univega. There is a 2 x 10 mm scratch on the Univega logo on the head tube. There is a 3 x 35 mm imperfection in the finish on the drive-side top tube. There is a 3 x 10 mm imperfection in the finish on the drive-side top tube near the intersection with the head tube. There is corrosion on the underside of the fork crown. There is corrosion on the underside of the seat. There is wear around the front and rear dropouts.  There is wear on the braking surfaces of the rims. The rear wheel is slightly out of true. The bearings in the front and rear hubs are running roughly. The chain measures 0.75 on the chain wear tool. The sidewall on the front tire is dry and should be replaced soon. There is something loose inside the front fork. The front fork has no safety tabs. The bar tape is slipping off in places. Frame and Wheel carefully and in good faith inspected this wheel, but cannot guarantee that every imperfection has been spotted.

Frame and Wheel conclusion

Frame and Wheel’s view is that this bicycle will suit the smaller rider who is comfortable riding classic bicycles and who seeks the zen of 6-speed down-tube shifting. It will also make a very nice and perhaps more suitable addition to a vintage bicycle collection: the components are original specifications, the frame has a distinctive Japanese provenance and the bicycle is an excellent example of Univega’s touring models form the 1980s. Frame and Wheel notes that it is unusual to find classic touring bicycles in good condition, as their lower price point makes it easier for the owner to relegate them to the garage and a lifetime of neglect. This scenario did not play out with this bicycle and thus the offering represents an excellent opportunity to obtain a unique, healthy and charming bicycle at an excellent valuation.

These bars are the HED Flip-Lite Aerobar extensions and the bar clamp diameter is 26.0 mm. They sold for $115.00 and were returned.

The extensions are from the 2011 inventory of spare parts of an IBD. The extensions were cut and used for about 100 miles before being returned to the IBD and switched out. They are in very good condition. They are clean and show only light signs of wear. The carbon extensions and arm rests are not cracked or flaking. There is no corrosion on the bolts or in the bolt holes. The velcro adheres securely to the arm rests. The foam pads are clean and adhere securely to the velcro. Frame and Wheel notes that there are light abrasions on the base of the extensions from installation and removal in the clamp. The bars feature arm rests that can be “flipped” upwards when climbing. The crank set was originally installed on a Trek Speed Concept triathlon bicycle that was purchased new in April 2011. The crank set was switched out for compact cranks with shorter arms in May 2011. The crank set has been in storage ever since and the owner is selling them because she does not need them. The crank set features standard road gearing, a hollow outer chain ring and the new gray finish. The crank set is in very good condition. It is clean and shows only light wear. The chain rings are not bent and the teeth are not chipped or broken.  All the chain ring bolts and crank arm fixing bolts, caps and washers are included. The bolt holes for the pedals and the crank arms are not stripped. There is no corrosion anywhere on the cranks set. The splines are not stripped or damaged. Frame and Wheel notes the following. There is some wear on the axle. There are two 1 mm x 40 mm abrasions on the edge of the non-drive side crank arm. The crank set is from an IBD’s spare parts inventory and has about 3,000 miles of use. The crank set is in good condition. The chain rings are not bent and the teeth are not chipped or broken. The teeth do not resemble shark fins (which indicates excessive wear). The chain ring bolts can be loosened and are not stripped. The crank arms are not cracked or chipped. The bolt holes for the pedals have no corrosion and they are not stripped. The cartridge bearings in the cup set turn smoothly. The cup set threads are not stripped and there is no corrosion. Frame and Wheel is auctioning a Mavic Cosmic Carbone SL wheel set on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store. The wheels were purchased new at Kennebunkport Bicycle in August 2010. They were used in one race in 2010 and one race in 2011. They were used for some training in 2011. The owner is selling them because she is training with power and would like to upgrade to race wheels that are built up with a power tap hub. The wheels have been in storage for most of 2011. They have never been crashed. They have always been stored indoors and they have had only one owner. The wheels with skewers weigh 4 pounds and 4 ounces (1,930 grams). The serial number on the front wheel reads C90413106 and the serial number on the rear wheel reads C90412961. Free hub body washer included. No tires or instruction manual included. Review of condition

The wheels are in very good condition. They are clean and they are ready to ride. There are no dents, bends or scratches in the alloy rims. There are no cracks, flaking or chips in the carbon shells. The stickers are clean and adhere properly. The axles are not bent. The rims are round and true and the spokes are tight and straight. The bearings are smooth and the wheels spin freely and quietly. The pawls are not excessively loud. There are no notches on the splines of the free hub body. There is no play in the hubs. The rim tape is clean and fresh. Frame and Wheel notes the following: There is a 15 x 40 mm abrasion on the drive-side carbon shell of the rear wheel from a transition zone scramble. There is a 20 mm abrasion on the face of a near-by spoke. The braking surfaces of the rims show some wear. There is light corrosion on some of the spokes. There is corrosion on the inside face of the quick release adjusting nut. There is corrosion on the rear wheel lock nut. Frame and Wheel carefully and in good faith inspected this item but cannot guarantee that every imperfection has been spotted.

Frame and Wheel conclusion

Frame and Wheel’s view is that these are very nice and very practical aerodynamic clincher wheels that will do very well for racing or fair weather training. The wheels are in very good condition: the bearings are silky smooth and the rims rock-solid straight and true, which indicates that these wheels have been hardly used at all. The 12K weave of the carbon shells and their 52 mm depth give the wheels a distinctive aero look and the black and yellow highlights of the Mavic logo is as compelling as ever. The wheels will suit the triathlete and the road cyclist who seek an aero edge without the work and the expense of deep dish carbon tubular wheels. An excellent opportunity to obtain first class wheels at first class valuation.
