1992 Mavic 3G carbon tubular wheelset 7-speed threaded Maillard trispoke 700c
Frame and Wheel is auctioning a Mavic 3G wheel set on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store. The owner purchased the wheel set second hand from a racing cyclist more than ten years ago. The current owner used them in one race at that time and then placed them in storage where they have been ever since. The current owner never crashed the wheels. The owner is selling them because he does not use them anymore. The wheel set features full carbon construction, bladed “trispoke” design, tubular carbon rims, interchangeable hubs, 52 mm rim depth, 18 mm rim width, threaded rear hub, 7-speed Maillard Sachs freewheel (12-21), Campagnolo rear skewer, Mavic provenance and distinctive 20th century aero cool. The wheels as shown weigh 5 pounds 6 ounces (2.4 kg). The hub serial number on the front wheel reads 9204E. The hub serial number on the rear wheel reads 9208D. There are 70 images of the wheel set at Frame and Wheel’s Flickr page. Please take a look. No front skewer. Ships in custom wheel boxes.

Review of condition
The wheels are in good condition. They are clean. There are no cracks, flexing, flaking in the three carbon spokes on the front or the rear wheel. There are no cracks, flexing, flaking or discoloration in the carbon walls on the front or the rear wheel. The spokes are firmly connected to the rim walls. The hubs spin smoothly. The wheels are true and round. The valve openings are undamaged and unobstructed. The threads on the rear hub are not stripped or corroded. The freewheel is not corroded. The skewer is straight. The stickers are not peeling off. Frame and Wheel notes the following. There is a 10 mm x 20 mm contusion and a bulge in the rear drive side braking surface of the rim near the valve opening. There is a related 1 mm x 15 mm separation between the braking surface of the rim and the base of the wheel directly behind it. Consequently, there is 1.5 mm lateral hop in the rear wheel when placed in a truing stand. The freewheel hub does not spin freely and will benefit from servicing. There is some play in front and rear hubs. There is a light layer of glue on the rims. There is a 4 mm x 30 mm smudge on the wall of the front wheel. There is a 10 mm x 15 mm abrasion on the drive side rim wall. There are abrasions around the drive side hub from a chain. Part of the sticker on one of the rear drive side spokes has peeled off. The teeth on the sprockets show wear. The braking surfaces of the rims show wear. Some of the stickers show wear. There is corrosion on the skewer.

Frame and Wheel conclusion
Frame and Wheel’s view is that this Mavic 3G wheel set will appeal primarily to the collector of Mavic wheels and perhaps also to the classic bike enthusiast who is seeking to build up a replica of the bicycle used by Chris Boardman at the Barcelona Olympics.  The wheels show wear and will benefit from some servicing, but they are in good condition for a twenty-one year old set of wheels. Frame and Wheel does not believe that these wheels are a practical choice for serious racing and training given the tremendous advances in technology since 1992, but they will do fine for display purposes or gentle use. A rare opportunity to obtain a modern day Mavic classic.
