Frame and Wheel is auctioning a 1982 Trek 412 bicycle on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store. The owner purchased the bicycle new in 1982 and used it recreationally for about two years. It was then placed in a basement and remained there until 2012. The frame set features Ishiwata 022 double butted steel tubing, crafted luggs, Suntour adjustable dropouts, braze-on cable housing guide, water bottle cage mount, chain-stay chain hanger, pannier mounts, brass Trek head tube badge, engraved “Trek” lettering on chain stay and fork crown, Trek Micro-adjust external cup head set and Ishiwata front fork. The bicycle features, Suntour VX-S rear and front derailleur, Suntour shift levers, Sakae Ringo Custom crank set, Dia-Compe 500Q brakes and brake levers, Sakae Ringo handle bars, Sakae Ringo SP-150 pedals, Suntour 6-speed freewheel, Avocet Condor seat, twenty-seven inch Rigida AL 1320 rims with Sunshine hubs, new Continental Ultra Sport tires, and original Trek provenance. The bicycle as sown weighs 23 pounds 7 ounces. The serial number on the bottom bracket reads 016199. The bicycle was restored and made ready to ride by Back Bay Bicycle in Portland, Maine in 2012. Improvements include new cable housing and cables, new handlebar tape, new chain, new tubes and tires and new brake lever hoods. Original instruction booklet and owner receipt included. There are 140 images of the bicycle ant Frame and Wheel’s Flickr Page. Please take a look. Many thanks to Skip Echert at Vintage Trek for providing fine information and catalogs on vintage Trek Bicycles.

Review of condition
The bicycle is in good condition. It is clean and ready to ride. The shifting is precise and complete in all 12 gears. The brakes activate easily and grip well. There is 4 mm of pad remaining on the wear indicators. The wheels are true and round and they spin freely and smoothly. There are no dents or cracks in the rim or the wall of the wheels. The spokes are tight. There is no corrosion on the spokes. The hub flanges are not cracked. The tire treads are fresh and the tubes hold pressure.

There are no dents, bends or bulges that raise concerns about the structural integrity of the frame. The rear triangle is in alignment with centerline of the frame to within 2.5 millimeters (the width of two pennies). The rear drop outs align properly. The front drop outs align properly. The rear derailleur hanger is straight and undamaged. The front derailleur hanger is clamped-on securely. There are no dents bends or bulges that raise concerns about the structural integrity of the front fork. The steer tube does not show any cracks or bulges. The steer tube threads are not stripped. The crown race is secured firmly. The head set is complete. The bearings turn smoothly and are not corroded. There is no play in the bottom bracket. There is no corrosion in the water bottle cage bolt holes. The handlebars are not bent. There are no rips or abrasions on the seat. The chain does not read 0.75 or 1.0 on the chain wear tool.

Frame and Wheel notes the following. There is a 20 mm x 16 mm flaking in the finish on the non drive side down tube. There is a 12 mm x 3 mm flaking in the finish near to it. There is a 10 mm x 10 mm flaking in the finish on the drive side chain stay near the bottom bracket from wheel rub. There is a 1 mm x 15 mm scratch in the finish on the drive side down tube near the shifter. There is 2 mm x 4 mm scratch in the finish on the non drive side down tube near the water bottle cage mount. There is a 3 mm x 3 mm scratch in the finish on the non drive side down tube near the shifter. There are small scratches in the finish on the back of the right front fork blade. There is a 5 mm x 5 mm bubbling in the finish on the top of the drive side chain stay. There are wrinkles in the Trek sticker on the down tube. There is surface corrosion on the crown race and the external cup set. There is surface corrosion on the front derailleur cage. There is surface corrosion on the front and rear hubs. There is wear on the front and rear drop outs. The leather seat covering on the drive side of the seat is loose. The braking surfaces of the rims show wear. Some of the spokes have bends. There is corrosion around some of the nipples.

Frame and Wheel conclusion
Frame and Wheel’s view is that this Trek 412 will make a fine addition to a vintage Trek bicycle collection. It will also do very well for the smaller rider who is seeks the smooth ride of steel, the compliance of 32 mm tires and the zen of down tube friction shifting. Although the bicycle shows some wear, it is in good condition for a bicycle that is thirty-one years old. The Ice Blue finish and dark blue panel on the seat tube give the bicycle a simple voice that speaks of a time when Trek was a small company, and riding a road bike had fewer clicks, taps and gears and more leather, cotton and steel. The new owner will thoroughly enjoy riding this bike as well as using it as a conversation piece.  A rare opportunity to obtain an American original.
