2006 Zipp 404 tubular carbon wheelset 700c 18/24 spoke Zipp 82/182 hub Zipp SS skewer
Frame and Wheel is auctioning a Zipp 404 wheel set on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store. The wheels were purchased new in 2006. They have had only one owner. They were used for racing and training. They were never crashed. The original rear rim cracked during training and was replaced under the Zipp crash replacement program in 2009. The rear wheel has been used only occasionally since then. The front wheel was used primarily on a time trial bike for racing. The owner is selling the wheel set because it is no longer needed. The wheels feature carbon tubular rims, Zipp 82 front hub and Zipp 182 rear hub, bladed Sapim spokes, 58 mm rim depth, 22 mm rim width, 18 (F) / 24 (R) spoke count, Zipp stainless steel skewers and Zipp 404 cool. The wheels as shown weigh 3 pounds (1.4 kg). There are 50 images of the wheel set at Frame and Wheel’s Flickr page. Please take a look.

Important information

Review of condition
The wheels are in good condition. They are clean and they are ready to ride. The hubs spin smoothly and freely. The spokes are tight and straight. The rims are round and the wheels are true. There is no lateral or vertical variation in the rims when placed in a truing stand. There are no cracks, flexing, flaking or discoloration in the carbon rim or the carbon shell. There are no cracks in the carbon dust caps. There are no cracks in the hub bodies. There is no play in the hubs. There are no cracks in the flanges of the hubs. The stickers are not peeling off. The skewers are straight and complete. Frame and Wheel notes the following. There are notches on the free hub body from a cassette. There is surface corrosion on the front hub. There is surface corrosion on the nipples. There is wear on the ends of the skewers. There is a 30 mm scratch on a front wheel Zipp sticker. The braking surfaces show wear. The initials of the owner are written on the stickers. There is glue on the rims.

Frame and Wheel conclusion
Frame and Wheel’s view is that these Zipp 404 wheels will make an excellent choice for the road cyclist who seeks a versatile set of tubular wheels for racing and training. Although the hubs and the rims represent Zipp’s previous generation technology, the  wheels are nevertheless in good condition with many hours of racing and training remaining in their carbon rims. These wheels will immediately transform the look, feel and performance of any time trial or road bicycle and can be made to go as fast as their wider and more glamourous Zipp Firecrest cousins. The new owner will relish the fast and smooth ride characteristics of these deep dish wheels and perhaps may never return to clincher rims. An excellent opportunity to obtain an iconic set of Zipp wheels.
