1991 Serotta Davis Phinney 52cm steel frame set custom Molteni orange
Frame and Wheel is auctioning a 1991 Serotta Davis Phinney steel frame set on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store. The frame was purchased new in 1992 and used for  occasional racing. The original finish was deep purple with “day-glo” yellow stickers. The frame set was repainted by Joe Bell in 2008. It was built up with Camapgnolo parts and used for fair weather recreational riding. A new Chris King Gripnut head set was installed in 2011. The frame set has never been crashed. It has had only one owner. The owner is selling it because he no longer rides it frequently and he is clearing out his unused cycling equipment. The frame set features Columbus SLX tubing, asymmetrical “sprint control” power rear triangle, crafted lugs, bosses for down tube shifting (with barrel adjuster adapters for index shifting mounted), double water bottle cage mounts, Serotta “S” on brake bridge, top tube eyelets for external cabling, seat stay chain hanger, adjustable semi horizontal rear drop outs, Chris King Gripnut external head set and distinctive Molteni orange finish with clear coat. The serial number on the bottom of the bottom bracket shell reads SD 52 000595. The serial number on the steer tube reads SD 52 000595. The frame set as shown weighs 5 pounds 13 ounces (2.63 kg). Please see 90 additional images of the frame set at Frame and Wheel’s Flickr page. Please see the Frame and Wheel website for more information about the service.
Review of condition
The frame set is in very good condition. It is clean and ready for build. There are no dents, bends or bulges that raise concerns about the structural integrity of the frame or fork. The rear triangle is in alignment with the centerline of the frame. There is no wear on the bottom of the down tube, on the back of the seat tube, on the insides of the chain stays or under the front fork crown. The down tube barrel adjusters work properly and are clear of obstructions and corrosion. The down tube bosses are not damaged. The cartridge bearings turn smoothly and the external cups are not damaged. The bottom bracket threads are not stripped or corroded. The stickers are not peeling. There is no corrosion in the drop outs, brake mount holes or the water bottle bolt holes. The steer tube is not cracked, bent or showing any bulges. The front drop outs are in alignment with each other. The crown plate is not bent. The cable guides on the bottom of the bottom bracket shell are not damaged. The eyelets on the top tube are not damaged. Frame and Wheel notes the following. There is a 1 mm x 10 mm flaking in the finish on the bottom edge of drive side head tube just above the word “King”. There is a 1 mm x 3 mm flaking in the finish on the top edge of the drive side bottom bracket shell. There is wear around the rear and front drop outs. There is flaking in the finish around the down tube bosses under neath the barrel adjuster mounts There are two 1 x 3 mm abrasions in the chain stay protector. There is no clear coat over the Campagnolo stickers.
Frame and Wheel conclusion
Frame and Wheel’s view is that this Serotta Davis Phinney frame set will suit the cyclist who seeks the feel and the look of a classic steel bike, appreciates the craftsmanship of Ben Serotta and Joe Bell and honors the cycling excellence of Davis Phinney. The frame set has been well cared for and lightly used and is in very good condition. It is a blank canvas on which the new owner can create his or her own classic bike masterpiece. Built up with Campagnolo Super Record components and some classic tubular wheels, the finished bike will have a cheery voice and it will truly be one of a kind. This is a very rare and unique opportunity to obtain a classic steel frame set at an excellent valuation. Mr. Phinney and Mr. Serotta will be very pleased to see this bike back on the road.
