Vintage 1985 Trek 660 48 cm 19 inch steel frame set road red
Frame and Wheel is auctioning a 1985 Trek 660 48 cm steel frame set on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store. The frame set was purchased new as a complete bicycle at Seaside Cycle in Manchester, Massachusetts in 1985. The owner used the bicycle recreationally for a few years and then switched out all of the parts to a 1989 Trek 660 True Temper frame set (also on auction at the Frame and Wheel eBay Store). The original frame set has never been crashed or repainted and has spent the past twenty years stored in a dry basement. The owner is selling the frame because he has no use for it and would like to use the proceeds of this auction to upgrade his existing bicycle. The frame set features Reynolds 531cs (Club Sport) tubing on the front triangle and Reynolds CrMo 501 on the rear triangle and front fork, original Trek logo with brass background, crafted lugs, “Trek” engraving on “fast back” seat stays, rear triangle made in Japan by Tange, cable routing for rear derailleur that is external and under the bottom bracket, Trek 660 chain guard, bolts for down tube shifting, down tube mounts for two water bottle cages and Stronglight threaded one inch headset. The frame set as shown weighs 2.72 kg (6 pounds) and the serial number on the bottom of the bottom bracket shell reads 136668. The serial number or model number on the front fork steer tube reads 4C. There are 80 images of the item at Frame and Wheel Auction Services Please take a look.
Review of condition
The frame set is in very good condition. It is clean and there are no dents, bulges or bends in the tubes. There is no wear on the bottom of the down tube, back of the seat tube or under the front fork crown. There is no corrosion under the paint, in the bolts or in the bottom bracket. The paint finish is not peeling, bubbling or fading. There are no major scratches in the finish. The decals are not peeling away or missing. The rear dropouts are in alignment with the centerline of the frame. The steer tube is not bent. The front drop outs are in alignment with the centerline of the frame. All the pieces of the headset are included. The head set bearings are not corroded and turn smoothly. The headset races are not pitted or corroded. The steer tube threads are not stripped. The cups are clean and not cracked or corroded.
Frame and Wheel notes the following. There is a 2 mm x 3 mm scratch on the “R” in the  Trek on the drive-side down tube. There is a 5 x 10 mm area of scratches where the front derailleur was clamped on. There is a 50 mm scratch and some shorter scratches on the drive side chain stay. There are scratches on the top of the non-drive side bottom bracket shell. There is wear around the rear and front drop outs. There is wear around the brake mounts. There is light wear on the inside of the drive-side chain stay. There is light corrosion on the steer tube. Frame and Wheel carefully and in good faith inspected this item, but cannot guarantee that every imperfection has been spotted.
Frame and Wheel conclusion
This is a classic Trek frame set that is in very good condition. It will suit the smaller rider who seeks to build up a classic steel road bike. It will also appeal to the Trek aficionado who seeks to restore the original parts to this frame set which can be found on the Trek 660 True Temper bicycle that is also being auctioned. Even without components and wheels, the frame set has a voice, and is a tribute to the glory days of Reynolds tubing, crafted lugs and simple graphics. This is a rare and excellent opportunity to obtain a vintage steel trek at an excellent valuation.
