Frame and Wheel is auctioning a full suspension 2008 Specialized Epic Marathon size large with 26” DT Swiss 4.2 wheels, Magura Marta hydraulic disc brakes and a SRAM XO 9-speed derailleur and shifters on the Frame and Wheel eBay store. The bicycle was purchased new in 2009 from B&L bikes in San Diego. The owner rode this bicycle about five times around California before placing it in storage. It was tuned up recently at Cyclemania in Portland, Maine,. The bicycle has not been ridden in 2011. The bicycle has never been crashed and it has always been stored indoors. The owner is selling this bicycle because he does not ride it and he would like to consolidate resources towards the operation of his other bicycles. The bicycle features Specialized AFR rear shock, FOX F100 front fork shock, Magura Marat hydraulic disc brakes, SRAM XO 9-speed rear derailleur and shifters, Shimano Deore XT cranks and front derailleur, 26 inch DT Swiss 4.2 wheels, Specialized Phenom 143 seat with titanium rails and velcro / nylon chain guard. The owner is 6 feet tall with an inseam of about 32-34 inches. The bicycle as shown weighs 24 pounds and 11 ounces (11.2 kg). The serial number on the bottom bracket shell reads: WUD 70683259B. The serial number on the front fork reads: Y6962. No pedals included. Water bottle cage included. There are over 100 images of the bicycle at Frame and Wheel eBay Selling Services and on Facebook at Frame and Wheel. Please take a look. The bicycle is being sold as is.
Review of condition
The bicycle is in very good condition. It is clean and ready to ride. This bicycle shows very few signs of wear. There are no dents, bends or large scratches in the frame. There is no wear on the bottom of the down tube, on the back of the seat tube or under the crown of the front fork. The front and rear forks are in alignment with the centerline of the frame and the rear derailleur hanger is straight and undamaged. The handlebars are not cracked or scratched. There are no cracks in the cable housing. There is no play in the bottom bracket and there is no corrosion anywhere on the bike. The front and rear hydraulic shocks work properly and there are no leaks. The brakes work very well. Shifting is complete and smooth in all 27 gears. The chain does not read 0.75 or 1.0 on the chain wear indicator. The wheels are true and round and the spokes are straight and tight. The hubs spin freely and smoothly. The tires hold pressure and the tread is fresh. on both tires.
Frame notes the following: there are two 1 x 2 mm scratches on the drive-side top tube (in the letters E and I in the word EPIC). There is a 2 x 5 mm blemish in the letter A in the word SPECIALIZED on the drive-side downtube. There is a 2 x 10 mm abrasion on the drive-side edge of the saddle. There are some 2 x 2 mm scratches on the rim of the right front side of the rim. There are some small scratches on the rim of the rear wheel. The drop outs show wear. The finish on the teeth on the chain rings show wear.
Frame and Wheel conclusion
Frame and Wheel’s view is that this Epic Marathon mountain bike is effectively a new bicycle with signs of wear that are immaterial and nit-picky. It is in very good condition and it works fine. It will suit the rider who seeks a performance full suspension mountain bike and who will be satisfied with the traditional twenty-six inch wheel size. Frame and Wheel highlights that this bicycle has had a very sheltered and protected life so far. It is fresh and hungry and it deserves to be turned loose on the single tracks of New Hampshire or the gravel trails of California. The new owner will be transformed by the passionate spirit of this bicycle, and will take deserved satisfaction in knowing that the bicycle was liberated at a price that represents epic value.

Reserve price is a premium to book value
Frame and Wheel is informed that the owner paid $3,400 for this bike in 2009. Frame and Wheel believes that high performance bicycles lose about 25% of their value each year wether or not they are used. This implies that the book value of this bicycle is about $1,000. Frame and Wheel believes that the bike deserves a premium to the book value for the following reasons:
  • Very good condition and ready to ride.
  • Immaterial and nit-picky signs of wear and effectively new condition.
  • Full suspension frame set with top end Shimano and SRAM components.
  • A very nice performance mountain bike that deserves to owned and ridden by a dedicated mountain bike rider.
Frame and Wheel has set a reserve price that fairly reflects these factors and invites the market to begin bidding.
