Frame and Wheel is auctioning a 2008 Colnago C50 on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store. The frame set was purchased new at Pista Palace in San Diego in 2009. It was built up and used for recreational riding and for wheel demonstration purposes. The owner put less than 1,000 miles on the frame set. It was never raced. It was never crashed. The bike has had only one owner and has always been stored indoors and professionally maintained. It has not been ridden in 2012. The frame set features sloping geometry, the distinctive “high-power” HP chain stays, biconic top tube and down tube, wishbone shaped seat stay (B-stay), straight blade Carbon 75 front fork, carbon lugs, Italian thread bottom bracket and special order and visually pleasing TWBK finish. The bicycle features new 2012 Easton EC90SL carbon clinchers with Lightweight titanium skewers and new Continental tires, 2010 SRAM Red components, FSA Plasma integrated handle bars and Fizik Arione seat. The serial number on the non drive-side drop out is AC 720. The serial numbers on the front fork drop outs are 7D09 (non drive-side) and C076 (drive-side). The bicycle as shown weighs 15 pounds 7 ounces (7.0 kg). The owner is 6 foot 3 inches with an inseam of 34 inches. No pedals included. Two Elite fiberglass water bottle cages included. Review of condition

The bicycle is very good condition. It is clean and ready to ride. The shifting is precise and complete in all twenty gears. The brakes activate easily and grip well. There is 3 mm of pad remaining on the wear indicators. The wheels are true and round and they spin freely and smoothly. There is no cracking, flaking or flexing in the rim or the wall of the wheels. The spokes are straight and tight. There is no wear on the braking surfaces of the rims. The tires are new and holding pressure. There is no discoloration, bulging, flexing or flaking that raise concerns about the structural integrity of the frame or the fork. There is no road wear on the bottom of the down tube, the back of the seat tube or on the inside surfaces of the chain stays. The rear triangle is in alignment with centerline of the frame. The rear derailleur hanger is straight and undamaged. The front derailleur hanger is securely riveted to seat tube and undamaged. The steer tube does not show any cracks or bulges. The crown race is secured firmly. The head set is complete and the cartridge bearings turn smoothly. There is no play in the bottom bracket. There is no corrosion in the bolts on the steer tube, the seat post or in the water bottle cage bolt holes. The cable housing is not cracking and the cables are not corroded. The cable stops are riveted on to the frame securely. There is no flaking or discoloration on the handlebars. The chain does not read 0.75 or 1.0 on the chain wear tool. Frame and Wheel notes the following. There is a 10 mm x 5 mm chip in the finish on the underside of the crown. There are small chips near to it. There is a an 8 mm U-shaped scratch on the underside non drive-side chain stay. There are two 0.5 mm size scratches on the head tube. There is wear around the rear and front drop outs. There are grease marks on the handle bar tape and the tape shows wear. The seat shows some wear. There is light wear on the drive side chain stay from a dropped chain. There is no Ernesto Colnago signature on the top tube.

Frame and Wheel conclusion

Frame and Wheel’s view is that this Colnago C50 will suit the taller and dedicated road  cyclist who appreciates the design features of Colnago frame sets, the functionality of SRAM Red components and the smoothness of Easton EC90SL carbon clinchers. The bike is stiff, comfortable and remarkably light for its size. Additionally, the TWBK finish is a special order finish for this frame. The bike has been very lightly used and has many hours of training and racing remaining in its carbon tubes. Given that the C50 is no longer in production, the new owner will be in possession of a modern day classic that will attract the praises of the peleton, grow sweeter with age and produce many hours of riding satisfaction. Ernesto will be pleased to know that this bike has returned to the road.

The frame set is designed for electronic shifting (Di2). Cable stops are absent and there are openings on the bottom bracket and the down tube for wires and junctions. The frame set features an Austro-Daimler 37SL carbon fork, full internal cabling, pearl white paint finish, tapered head tube, oversized down tube, seat tube and chain stays, asymmetrical top tube, front and rear carbon drop outs, bolt-on front derailleur hanger for the front derailleur, replaceable rear derailleur hanger and English thread 68 mm bottom bracket. The frame set includes full carbon seat post, single bolt adjustable seat clamp, threadless sealed cartridge bearing head set assembly, alloy seat post collar, chain stay plate and “fishing-line” and fittings for Di2 installation. The serial number on the bottom of the bottom bracket reads CG1101003029. The serial number under the crown of the front fork reads CG1101003049. The frame set as shown weighs 1.70 kg or 3 pounds 12 ounces. Review of condition

The frame set is in excellent condition. It is clean and ready for build. There are no scratches, chips or flaking in the finish of the frame. For the build

The frame set is new and should be prepared and built-up by an experienced and skilled mechanic who is also familiar with installing Shimano Di2 components. The use of a drill is required to expand the opening at the top of the bottom bracket for the front derailleur wire. The bottom bracket and rear derailleur hanger threads should be chased and faced. Water bottle bolts and chain stay protector strip is not included. Frame and Wheel has observed through its secondary market business that many cyclists tire of their performance carbon frame sets after about three years and replace them with newer or different models. The old frame sets are either sold on eBay, allowed to collect dust in the basement indefinitely or sent to the landfill. Thus, the origination of the Frame and Wheel Credit or Cash program. This program allows the original owner of an Austro-Daimler frame set to return it to Frame and Wheel for what ever reason (crash damage, normal wear and tear, defect, product evolution, upgrade, etc.) in return for a credit towards a new frame set or an outright market driven cash payment. This program is easier to understand and manage than existing warranty and crash replacement programs, it creates value and satisfaction for customers and it does something for sustainability.

Frame and Wheel Clear Your Gear

Please send in your old frame set or any other unused or unwanted cycling equipment to Frame and Wheel Auction Services in the box in which you received your frame set. Frame and Wheel Auction Services will auction your old items on your behalf and forward the proceeds to you net of expenses and a commission (Please see Frame and Wheel Auction Services for more information about commissions). This program defrays the cost of your new frame set and reduces cycling equipment clutter in your home. It also allows for the sustainable use of Frame and Wheel’s fleet of custom made frame set boxes. For domestic customers, shipping is paid by Frame and Wheel and Federal Express will pick up the box from your location. For international customers, contact Frame and Wheel regarding shipping cost and you will be reimbursed through Pay Pal. 

If you are not interested in sending gear to be auctioned, that is fine and understood. Frame and Wheel will still be very grateful to have the box back so that frame sets can continue to be delivered to customers around the world. Be sure write your name and home town on the side of the box so we will know where the box has been! If you cannot be bothered to send the box back or you would like to keep the box, that is fine too. Frame and Wheel will invoice you the cost of the box ($60.00) after three weeks and it will be yours!
