1995 Cannondale R800 58cm aluminum frameset black/violet road

Sold: $61  Buyer: USA
1995 Cannondale R800 58cm aluminum frameset black/violet road
Frame and Wheel is auctioning a 1995 Cannondale R800 frameset on the Frame and Wheel eBay Store. The frame set was obtained new in 1996. It was used for training and triathlons. The owner stopped riding it in 2007. It has been in storage since then. It has never been crashed. It has had only one owner. He is selling it because he does not ride it anymore. The frame set features aluminum construction, Kinesis Lightweight Aluminum front fork and Campagnolo Veloce external cup head set. The frame features “swaged” down tube and “ovalised” top tube, 130 mm rear dropouts, replaceable rear derailleur hanger, down tub shifting bosses, black with violet highlight finish and 1990s “Made in the USA” Cannondale provenance. The frame set as shown weighs 4 pounds 12 ounces. The serial number is illegible. Please see 90 additional images of the frame set at Frame and Wheel’s Flickr page. Please see the Frame and Wheel website for more information about the service.

Review of condition
The frame set is in fair condition. There is corrosion in the following locations on the frame: the bottom of the bottom bracket, the bottom of the down tube, under the top tube near the junction with the head tube; surrounding the top tube cable stops; around the down tube bosses; on the head tube; at the junction of the chain stays, bottom bracket and seat tube; around the water bottle cage mounts; on the the top of the non drive chain stay; and around the drop outs on the front fork. This corrosion has caused the finish to bubble and chip. There is a 1 mm x 40 mm scratch on the non drive side head tube. There is a 2 mm x 30 mm scratch on the drive side down tube on the third “n” in Cannondale. There is wear on the seat tube from the front derailleur hanger. There is wear around the rear and front drop outs.

Otherwise, the frame set is clean and ready for restoration and build. There are no dents, bends or bulges that raise concerns about the structural integrity of the frame. The rear triangle is in alignment with the centerline of the frame to within 4.0 millimeter (the width of two pennies). The rear derailleur hanger is straight and undamaged. The cable stops are welded securely and free of obstructions. There is no damage or corrosion in the head tube bore. The bottom bracket threads are not stripped. There are no dents, bends or bulges that raise concerns about the structural integrity of the front fork. The threads on the steer tube are not stripped. The headset bearings are not corroded. The head set turns smoothly.

Frame and Wheel conclusion
Frame and Wheel’s view is that this Cannondale R800 will make a fine restoration project for the Cannondale enthusiast or classic bike collector. It will also make a fine candidate for the bike builder who wants to get some practice repainting aluminum frame sets. The frame set may also have a future as fixed gear machine. Despite its obvious cosmetic problems, the frame set still has a healthy voice that speaks of performance in a classic accent. The new owner will have fun getting this frame set back on the road and may even choose to keep the finish as it is (they certainly do not paint them like this anymore). A great opportunity to obtain an aluminum frame set at an attractive valuation.

It will also suit the smaller rider who seeks the smooth ride characteristics of steel and the simpler graphics of late 1980s. The frame set is in very good condition for a 25 year old frame set and shows only light signs of wear. It is a blank slate on which the new owner can create his or her own modern day classic. Built up with SRAM Red components, carbon bars and stem and Zipp 303 tubulars, the bicycle will have a voice that speaks of Dave Moulton’s legendary racing and steel frame building triumphs with a contemporary vocabulary and carbon accent. Regardless of the build, this is a rare and unique opportunity to join the Dave Moulton Peleton.
